As the wrist takes a well deserved rest after the exploits of the biggest watch show on the planet, Baselworld, DiscerningGent.com reflects on what was another eye-catching showcase of the very best in horology. The easy option would be to pick hundreds, of the thousands, of watches on show, but the real challenge lies in narrowing all that beauty down to just the select few. Three to be exact. Here we go…
Rolex Cosmograph Daytona
Rolex make amazing timepieces, we know this and so do you. However, the Daytona in steel with Cerachrom bezel is the jewel in the majestic crown. To mark the 50th anniversary of the Daytona last year, Rolex unveiled a platinum Daytona with blue dial and black bezel – a beauty. But this year Rolex has perfected on perfection with the Daytona in steel with a black Cerachrom bezel and either a steel or black dial. What makes this ever more desirable is the exclusivity of it too.
Patek Philippe 5930G World Time Chronograph
The craftsman at Patek Philippe revel in a world of complications – by that DiscerningGent.com refers to the intricate movements of a timepiece that go way beyond hours and minutes. This watch blends the chronograph with a signature Patek Philippe complication – a world clock movement that can show the time in 24 different time zones. The steel case and bezel with the blue dial and leather strap make this utterly beautiful and incredibly useful for the jet-set discerning gent.
Omega Speedmaster Moonphase Chronograph
Officially this Omega is named the ‘Speedmaster Moonphase Chronograph Master Chronometer’ – essentially this is the return of the moonphase option that the Speedmaster line is famously known for. This is one unique timepiece featuring Omega’s all-new 9904 movement along with 368 parts that fit beautifully under the blue ceramic dial. The moonphase is a nice touch together with the 12-hour chronograph. Uber-watch-geek fact – Omega claims the image of the moon is so realistic that you can see a footprint from the NASA Apollo missions on it.
